As leaders in innovation, SONIC Drive-In is always looking for opportunities to change the fast-food game. And the brand recently did just that with its recent test of two new products: Broccoli Cheddar Tots and Cold Foam.
Already known for its famous Tots, SONIC’s evolution of the crispy, crunchy potato snack into a mini casserole checks boxes as both indulgent and a healthier option, with a full serving of vegetables in a large order. Broccoli Cheddar Tots include bits of warm broccoli and melty cheddar cheese, covered in a crispy coating.
“We spent a little over two years working on the Broccoli Cheddar Tots and we feel like this is a really authentic spin in an area where we have quite a bit of equity. It’s also a product that isn’t being offered anywhere else,” said Scott Uehlein, Vice President of Product Innovation and Development for SONIC. “We’ve tested a few other vegetables we like that we may go to in the future, but this one was the most broadly appealing.”
The other item that was tested is Cold Foam, available as a topping to any of SONIC’s 1.3 million unique drink combinations.
“This isn’t whipped cream, it’s not sweet cream, but it’s a frothy sweet, foamy topper, reminiscent of our vanilla ice cream base, which adds depth of flavor to the drinking experience,” Uehlein said. “Cold Foam is a game-changer for SONIC. Our guests can scoop it off, mix it in or drink it with a balanced, vanilla flavor on top of our carbonated beverages, coffee or even our slushes.”
Broccoli Cheddar Tots recently completed testing in Wichita, Kansas, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, while Cold Foam was available in Amarillo, Texas.
