SONIC Foundation Helps Bring the Joy of Reading to Students in Oklahoma City

The SONIC Foundation – a 501c3 non-profit and operating division of the Inspire Brands Foundation, is focused on sparking brighter futures for America’s youth through support of three key pillars, including: hunger, education and community.

The SONIC Foundation is proud to partner with Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS), who recently added a new bus to its fleet, which will bring books to students at all OKCPS elementary, middle and high schools, as well as to community centers and events throughout the 2021-22 school year.

The ReadOKC On the Go! Book Bus is an ADA-compliant bus that has been modified into a mobile book bus filled with 5,000 books at a time. It was created to support ReadOKC’s mission of accessibility to reading materials throughout the district. The SONIC Foundation is the top sponsor and one of the community partners that helped fund the bus and books, which represent all reading levels and a wide variety of genres. As the Book Bus rolls into a school, community center or event, students will be able to hop on it and pick out a book of their choice to take home.

“The mission of ReadOKC is to instill a love of reading in all students,” said Mary Melon, President and CEO of The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools.  “Access to reading materials outside of school is a really important piece of building that love, as is building a child’s home library. We are so grateful to our amazing donors and volunteers who are making (the bus) possible.”

The goal is to distribute 10,000 books by the end of the 2021 calendar year and continue to replenish the inventory throughout the school year.
